4 out of 5 stars A great port for a storm   October 20, 2008
We've just come through four days without power after the remnants of Ike tore through Greater Cincinnati. We had a larger portable flourescent light, and it was a godsend, but the bulb -- apparently no longer available -- is dying. Therefore we bought several of these little torches, and have them stashed throughout the house.

Flashlights are fine; candles worked for centuries for our ancestors. But if you're without power, a small personal lamp makes life astoundingly more bearable when the power is off. We've not had a chance to use these particular units in total darkness, but we tried them with the street light on outside and they seem well-designed and easy to keep available. They are bright enough to read by, and one in the center of the kitchen counter allows us to see what we're cooking; moved to the kitchen table, it makes seeing how much ketchup I'm pouring much easier than a candle does. (If only it kept me from dripping out the back end of the hamburger -- but even a spotlight won't do that!)

LED technology creates a bright, clean light, and the reflectors in this unit spread it nicely. The sliding shield allow me to keep the direct light from shining in my wife's eyes. And the little fold-out feet provide a solid base for it to stand on the table.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful emergency lantern   July 20, 2008

After living for months in a house prone to frequent power outages, we finally acquired one of these. It's the best blackout lantern we've ever seen. It lights a room well enough to read by on its bright setting, and is good enough to navigate by easily on the dim setting. It stays lit for longer than any of our blackouts has ever lasted (not surprising, given the manufacturer's estimates), and the light quality is actually quite pleasant. We liked it so much, we're getting a whole set for our new house, to make sure that we can always find one in emergencies.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice   November 22, 2007

This is a great area light. At scout camp we hung it in our dining fly and it provided plenty of light for night activities. I'm glad to get rid if my heavier propane lantern. If you are wanting a light to read with you will not like this light. It's designed to broadcast light in a larger area and is not directed in a small space. Get a head lamp if you need a more concentrated light.

5 out of 5 stars Very small, and bright, with long life on batts!   May 25, 2007

This lantern is fantastic. We are remodeling and have used this lantern on low as a night light every night, all night, for over a week on one set of batteries. We hang it from a nail, turn it on low and go to bed. It bathes the whole room in a soft light so we don't stub our toes on construction junk on our way to the bathroom.

I'm not sure what the life span of batteries is on high but the high setting is very bright. You might not want to do beadwork but situate a couple of them correctly (above and behind people) and folks could play cards.

Every strength is also a weakness and having a bright output is no exception. This lantern is so bright that when lit, it's uncomfortable to look at directly. That's a common "problem". It's not really a problem per se... one needs to understand how to use these little guys and then they're wonderful. It's perfect for hanging high and setting back away from direct view in order to get bathed by its bright light.

I highly recommend this lantern!

5 out of 5 stars Impressive   February 21, 2007

This is one of the few LED flashlight-things that I really like. It gives room-filling light and you can hold it in the palm of your hand. It is a dandy thing for camping and power outages, and has a low power 25% setting for longer battery life.

It uses 4 AA batteries, but gives almost as much light as a full-size 4-D Coleman camping lantern with a krypton bulb. The size is surprising small: about the size of a regular 2-D flashlight minus the head.

It also has 2 small, but nice features. The top has a small loop handle made of wire that can be used to hang or attach it to things; if you have small fingers, it will fit 2 fingers through. It also has small feet that you can slide out for greater stability.

My only concern is the battery life: the package does not list it, but the manufacturer's website claims 80 hours. I am rather skeptical, so carry spares just in case. Mine has new batteries, so I cannot tell.
